Uasin Gishu's Matharu Market: A New Era for Small Businesses

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo has announced the successful completion of the Matharu Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Uasin Gishu County, with construction beginning in May 2024.

Only final touches on electrical fittings and landscaping remain before the official handover. This market is a pivotal element of the nationwide ESP infrastructure initiative, designed to rejuvenate local economies by providing dignified and structured trading spaces for over 300 traders.

The Matharu Market exemplifies modernity and efficiency, featuring contemporary stalls, a reliable water reticulation system, ablution blocks, waste collection areas, secure perimeters and gates, as well as an open-air section for flexible vending.

According to PS Omollo, this market is set to revolutionize how small and medium-sized traders operate, particularly those dealing in fresh produce, livestock products, and household goods. The enhanced facilities promote hygiene, security, and customer experience while providing shelter from harsh weather and reducing congestion.

“The project underscores the government's commitment to the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aimed at unlocking opportunities for hustler-led businesses, fostering local value chains, and generating sustainable livelihoods in rural and peri-urban areas,” he said.
