Bukhungu Stadium the Sporting Gem of Western Kenya

Residents of Western Kenya are eagerly awaiting for the completion works on Bukhungu stadium ahead of the AFCON 2027.

From soccer players, athletes, fans and even traders the ongoing transformation of the Stadium now by the county in collaboration with the national government is being seen as creating new avenues for more, sporting events, entertainment and opportunities for traders and business communities to make a kill from increased infrastructure investment.

According to the Kakamega county chief officer in charge of sports Lawrence Mukoyani, the completion of Bukhungu stadium and the hosting of the African cup of nations pre-match trainings is a huge milestone for the sports lovers and local players who will have the opportunity to meet interact and learn from their fellow renowned soccer stars across the African continent.

“The ongoing transformation of Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega is already creating new opportunities for athletes, football players, coaches, and traders as Western Kenya benefits from increased infrastructure investment.

The stadium upgrade is expected to strengthen sports development in the region, support businesses, and create opportunities for residents once the facility is completed.

The chief officer stated that the investment is part of a wider infrastructure development focus across Western Kenya, with projects including roads, markets, electricity connections, and other public facilities meant to harness each other for the development and growth of the county.

Bukhungu Stadium Upgrade Creates New Opportunities Residents from within have agreed to the fact that the stadium under construction was already giving residents hope, with workers on site and the project taking shape.

Mukoyani besides agreeing with them, he reminded them that completing the facility to the required standards would enable Kakamega to host major sporting events and create various new opportunities for them to benefit from.

“The stadium will contribute to the local economy and create jobs, particularly for young people, attract nurture more talent from them watching games being hosted there, and will support Kakamega growth at the same time”, he added.

Before the Fernandez Barasa’s regime assumed office, says Mukoyani, “the facility previously faced multiple challenges including limited seating, inadequate facilities for players and officials, and insufficient protection for spectators from the harsh sunlight.”

He however is expressing hope that the ongoing works is expected to address some of these shortcomings and provide a better environment for athletes, players and fans.

With the renovation of Bukhungu, it will substitute Mumias stadium that earlier was and had one of the best football surfaces in the region, before the facility deteriorated, forcing players to use open grounds.

A section of football fans and coaches drawn from Malava sub-county have hailed the exemplary work being conducted under the Fernandez Barasa and President William Ruto collaboration saying the new upgraded stadium will not only attract more sporting events to the region.

Sporting officials have praised the ongoing refurbishment of the stadium saying it is a huge boost to the pride of Western Kenya and positioned Bukhungu stadium as an important sporting and economic empowerment centre.

With better and increased sitting capacity, enclosed grounds, and improved infrastructure, this has made it a must reason for fans to attend matches besides creating opportunities for traders to conduct business around the stadium.

“The county sports chief officer concurs that indeed lack of properly enclosed and maintained facilities created safety concerns for fans and made it difficult for scouts to identify and develop young talent.

Bukhungu stadium has undergone significant changes since 2015, when it used to have trees, potholes and lacked the infrastructure of a modern sporting venue.”

He said the ongoing improvements had provided better facilities for athletics training, football and other sporting activities, allowing athletes to train for longer periods.

Also the stadium will be offering batter training conditions for not only soccer players but also athletes too.

"Already we are having teams and officials from other counties visiting to appreciate the new upgraded Bukhungu stadium, we know we will attract more sporting officials requesting to host their games here"

This will bring more revenue to the county as the earlier poor condition of the field increased the risk of falls and injuries and made it difficult for runners to train and compete effectively.

 As the improved facilities take shape, athletes can look forward to a safer, more reliable training environment.

Mukoyani is optimistic that with the upgrade of the stadium to meet international standards, it will showcase itself as ground for international matches.
