Chinese Construction Company Extends  Christmas Gesture to Needy Locals

Joy as an international Chinese road construction company mingled to share 2023 Christmas gifts with local staff and residents of Seretunin village in Baringo Central.

Chinese Henan Highway Engineering Company Limited (HEGO) is working on the 81-kilometre Kasoiyo-Riwo-Seretunin-Talai-Kasisit-Kampi ya Samaki Road Project expected to be completed by 2025. Currently it is 18 percent complete.

“In our social welfare, we just decided to donate some foodstuff to the needy families as a way of appreciating the local community and wishing them Merry Christmas and a Happy New 2024” Project Manager said.

The donation comprised of assorted items such as packets of Wheat Flour, Rice, Cooking Oil and Sugar.

Furthermore, the company also awarded certificates of merit and handed Christmas gifts to at least 12 outstanding employees, a continuous exercise aimed at capacity building staff.

“This is just the beginning we shall continue extending more such gestures throughout our stay here” manager said.

The contractor, however attributed low percentage of work done so far to small cash flow.

He said they are expecting to receive more money from the government as from next year to enable contractor mobilize more workforce and equipment, hence achieving the set targets.

The site manager urged local workers to be more attentive as they work with the Chinese counterparts to enable them tap the road construction skills. 

He said in future the local workers should be able to construct roads on their own because they will have the capacity, especially with little more training.

Ewalel Location Chief Patrick Kiprop while receiving the token appreciated Henan construction company for the warm gesture saying it will go along way to assist the needy people.

“Poverty level is so high in our locality and most parts of Baringo currently standing at almost 60 percent” he said.

He said the tarmac road is expected to connect over 20,000 people to public and private facilities such as schools, health centres and administrative units as well as linking farm produce to the markets.

Also awarded certificates of merit and Christmas gifts to outstanding employees agricultural area where people plant Maize, Coffee, variety of vegetables and fruits saying the produce don’t reach market on time due to poor road network.

“Hence upon completion the tarmac road will open the area and ease accessibility to markets” he said.

Kiprop further encouraged youth in the locality to seek employment with the company to enable them to get finances to start their own businesses and requested the company to employ more people.

Project Human Resource Manager Michael Ombati said the roadworks has employed over 200 local residents.

“I sincerely thank the staff for their full commitment aimed at completing the job on the set time” he said.

Ombati encouraged workers to keep time during working hours and give maximum concentration to enable them learn more skills.

Representative from Kenya Rural Roads Authority(KeRRA) supervising the works, however, lauded the company for doing commendable job so far.

“The road number RWC 613 meets the construction, maintenance, and upgrading bitumen standard” KeRRA official said.

He said despite teething financial changes the project is calling upon the government to fast track processing of funds to enable the contractor expedite the work.

The ceremony was characterised by lots of joy and fun as Chinese workers mingled with the local community and other workers.

Senior citizens from the community who received the foodstuff were so grateful to the company.
