EU Ambassador Geiger Celebrate International Women's Day in Elgeyo-Marakwet

The European Union Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger today graced the County International Women's Day celebrations in Iten.
The theme of the celebrations was 'Let us inspire inclusion, Education not Mutilation' to advocate against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Ambassador Geiger announced the EU commitment of Ksh 630 million towards supporting the fight against FGM in Kenya.
She called on collaborative efforts to completely eradicate FGM terming it an undignifying practice.
The envoy said she hoped the EU support would in the near future ensure that no girl has to face the 'cut' ever again in Kenya.
Governor Wisley Rotich, who hosted the envoy, reiterated his administration's commitment to continue championing the rights, inclusion and empowerment of women and girls.

He said the County Government would further advocate against harmful practices like FGM and Gender Based Violence that are eroding the gains being made in women empowerment.
Present at the function were Women Representative Caroline Ngelechei and Marakwet East MP Kangogo Bowen who said they would champion legislation aimed at completely eradicating FGM.

Victims of FGM further gave testimonials detailing the risks involved in the fight against FGM.
Father Amos Kimutai revealed how he was attacked and injured when he tried to rescue girls in Embobut where he serves as Parish priest.
He called for urgent intervention saying the vice is affecting many girls in the region adding that there is need for establishment of rescue centres to save them from the harmful practice.

Also present at the function was Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek, representatives of development partners, CECs, Chief Officers, County and National Government staff.
