An Administration Police (AP) officer assigned to the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit (CIPU) in Mbooni West, Makueni County, is being held after fatally shooting a colleague on Friday. 

The suspect, Constable Anthony Mariapei, and the deceased, Hassan Ahmed, were protecting the Mbooni West Deputy County Commissioner's office when the event occurred at night.


A police officer working in the report office at Mbooni Police Station, which is only 40 metres from the DCC's office, heard the gunshots and alerted other officers, who hurried to the site.

 

"They discovered a police officer in APS uniform crouching next to him, holding a G3 rifle. When trying to talk to him, it was discovered that the officer was bleeding on the left side of his ribs," according to a police report on the incident.

 "On further examination, it was discovered that he had been shot by use of a firearm and he was dead."

Mariapei then presented himself at the Mbooni Police Station, where he allegedly acknowledged to shooting Ahmed.

"After a short while APC Anthony Mariapei an officer attached to CIPU Mbooni West and who was on night guard duty at the DCC's office surrendered at Mbooni police station claiming that he had shot No.237720 APC Hassan Ahmed using G3 s/no A3 J54444 issued to him," according to the report of the police.

"The murder's motive has not yet been identified. The accused cop has been placed in custody pending further investigations. Both G3 rifles loaded with 18 and 20 bullets were issued to the accused and deceased cops, respectively.

 

Have been detainedThe deceased's body has subsequently been taken to the mortuary at Mbooni West Sub-County Referral Hospital, where it will be preserved as evidence while ballistic examinations are conducted.
