Is Chelugui eying a comeback in Baringo?
Former CS Simon Chelugui

Having contested the gubernatorial seat three times in Baringo and served as a running mate to former Governor Stanely Kiptis back in 2013, is Simon Chelugui making a truce to Baringo politics after recently being relieved from his duty by President William Ruto?

Until his dismissal, Chelugui was serving as Cooperatives and SMEs Cabinet Secretary, where he was instrumental in the implementation of the Kenya Kwanza government's hustler fund program.

Chelugui was the only CS who was inherited from former President Uhuru Kenyatta's regime, making the longest serving among his colleagues.

He has since retreated to his ranch and identified himself as a ‘rancher'.

Speculations have risen about whether he is aiming for a senatorial or gubernatorial position in the near future. Chelugui first entered politics in 1997 but was unsuccessful.

In the 2013 General Election, which included county government positions due to the 2010 Constitution, he sought the Baringo governorship but lost in the United Republican Party (URP) primaries.

He later teamed up with Stanley Kiptis, running as his deputy on a Kenya African National Union ticket, but they lost to Benjamin Cheboi.

Chelugui served under the Uhuru and Ruto administrations for eight years and became one of the youngest Cabinet Secretaries when he appointed to lead the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation in January 2018.

He also served as Labour Cabinet Secretary under Uhuru's regime.
