Is Kenya Doing Enough to Tackle the Disturbing Surge in Road Accidents?

Kenya has experienced a distressing increase in road accidents, prompting a critical examination of road safety in the country.

The recent spate of tragic incidents, including the collision between a bus and a caravan on Mombasa Road near Maungu, resulting in the immediate loss of ten Kenyatta University students' lives, has raised concerns about the overall state of road safety in Kenya.

The collision occurred on the night of March 18, 2022, with Voi OCPD Dafala Ibrahim confirming the tragedy and reporting an additional student's death while receiving medical treatment. 

The ill-fated Kenyatta University bus was transporting students on an academic field trip from Nairobi to Mombasa when the collision occurred. Unfortunately, this incident was not an isolated one.

Earlier on the same day in Bomet, a passenger van collided with a tractor, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and leaving 18 others injured. And just a few days prior, on March 16, a bus carrying students from Kapsabet Boys High School lost control and rolled over, claiming the lives of a teacher and a student.

The frequency and severity of these accidents have raised concerns about road safety in Kenya. Police statistics indicate that approximately 4,000 lives are lost annually in road accidents, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the issue.

The frequency and severity of these accidents raise the question: Is it the season for road accidents? While it may be tempting to attribute these tragedies to a specific time of year, it is crucial to recognize that road accidents can occur at any time.

It is the underlying factors, such as reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and inadequate infrastructure, that contribute to these incidents.

In response to the recent tragedies, the Ministry of Roads and Transport released a press statement on March 19, expressing its commitment to conducting thorough investigations into the causes of these accidents. The ministry emphasized the importance of discipline, adherence to traffic laws, and common courtesy among road users.

To enhance road safety, the ministry outlined several directives. It announced the collaboration between the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the traffic police to strictly enforce road safety laws.

The retesting of all Public Service Vehicles (PSV) and Heavy Commercial drivers, previously postponed, will now be implemented without delay. The NTSA will also introduce measures to ensure that drivers undergo medical testing to ascertain their fitness to drive.

Furthermore, the National Police Service (NPS) and NTSA will intensify nationwide enforcement efforts, including impounding unroadworthy vehicles and those lacking integration with the intelligent road safety management system for speed limiter data transmission.

While these measures are steps in the right direction, it is crucial to adopt a sustained and proactive approach to address the underlying factors contributing to road accidents in Kenya. Improving road infrastructure, including well-designed roads, clear signage, and effective traffic management systems, is imperative.

Adequate investment in infrastructure projects and regular maintenance should be prioritized to ensure the safety of road users. In addition to infrastructure, raising awareness through road safety education campaigns is vital. Promoting responsible driving, emphasizing the importance of adhering to traffic laws, and encouraging mutual respect among all road users can significantly contribute to reducing accidents.
