Laikipia County Works to Prevent Dam Disasters
Amidst concerns over the safety of 31 dams in Laikipia County, the government has taken proactive measures to contain potential disasters.
With heavy rains raising the risk of dam bursts, machinery from road contractors is being deployed to create essential spillways.
However, the county faces a challenge with only two functional excavators available for the task, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha and Deputy Governor Reuben Kamuri emphasized the critical need to control water levels in the dams to prevent catastrophic collapses.
Kyatha stressed the potential dangers posed to human lives, livestock, and property by the current state of the dams.
"As a committee, we have to move very fast to ensure that their spillways are functional and also access the strength of the walls based on the water capacity,” Kyatha said.
According to the County commissioner, the administration is commited to safeguarding communities against the adverse effects of the harsh weather and potential infrastructure vulnerabilities.
