Kenya National Union of Teachers(KNUT) proposes consolidation of all government bursary funds into the Ministry of Education to benefit needy students.

Meru Branch Executive Secretary Caxton Miungi said bursaries should be merged and pumped into one basket under the ministry of education to moot them directly to assist needy students in secondary schools.

Miungi said this will work more effectively instead of the kitty being controlled by politicians such as Memebers of Parliament(MPs),Governors, Woman Reps and MCAs.

"The politicians might give out bursaries to people who are not needy as they seek political favours," Miungi said.

He spoke exclusively Rural Times in his office in Meru town on Wednesday.

On employment of 46,000 teachers, he terms it a good move by the government.

He said when they were on strike, they demanded TSC to prioritize employment of teachers.

"We urged any intern who will be left out to come to our offices, and we will follow up to make sure he or she is employed," he said.

On grade nine, he said during public participation on presidential committee on education, Kenyans said students should be dormisiled in primary school.

"There are so many questions about grade nine people asking if there are classes for grade nine in primary schools.

During the 8-4-4 curriculum, some primary schools were having double or triple streams, so when the new curriculum came, some classes were left vacant," Miungi said.

Miungi said the government will construct schools in primary school without classrooms.

"Alumni in some schools have also opted to chip in and help construct laboratories," he said.
