Cargo Truck Overturns, Residents Loot Millions-Worth Herbicides
Truck accident, residents loot herbicides worth millions
By RTN Reporter
A trader counts millions of losses after a cargo track ferrying farm herbicides overturned at Ng'eria in Uasin-Gishu, Eldoret.
The goods were transported along Kenya's Mombasa-Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret-Nakuru-Kampala, Uganda highway.
No fatalities were reported in the Thursday early morning incident, while the victim(driver) was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital(MTRH) for treatment.
However, nothing was salvaged after residents, majority being farmers, flocked the accident scene to loot the herbicides contained in the cargo.
"This must have caused a big loss to the machandiser. We can not tell if the transit goods were destined here in Kenya, Uganda, or elsewhere" concern resident said.
In many such occasions, Kenyans have portrayed not only bad but dangerous culture of looting overturned tracks transporting deadly goods like petrol, gas cylinders, and lethal chemicals.
The worst memorable scenario was the massive loss of lives caused by fire outbreak in January 2009 when hundreds of people turned up to fetch spilt petrol at Salgaa, near Nakuru town.
At least 111 people perished, and several others sustained serious permanent bodily injuries.
"But more still, our culture nowadays seems to be eroded. People do not fear curses for stealing other people's property, " an elder Jonah Kigen at Ngeria said.
