A quack doctor in Kayole, Nairobi County, has been detained for allegedly scamming patients by operating a non-registered medical clinic while claiming to be a certified medical officer.

A group of detectives and officials from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) apprehended James Waweru Njenga, 45, at his facility, Axis Medical Clinic & Lab Services, located in Kayole Phase 1, following a complaint from one of his patients.

According to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, the patient filed a police complaint after being misdiagnosed with a liver condition and spending more than Ksh.60,000 on lab tests last month.

"In the filed complaint, the 31-year-old male victim indicated that between March 1 and March 27, 2024, Waweru charged him over Ksh.60,000 for sample tests allegedly at laboratories in some of the country's renowned medical facilities, before 'diagnosing' him with a liver disorder," the DCI said in a press release

.
The investigation agency stated that after the bogus liver disorder diagnosis, the impostor proceeded to prescribe various medicines, but the patient noticed that his condition appeared to be deteriorating.

The patient subsequently sought the advice of another doctor at Nairobi West Hospital, where lab testing came back negative for the disease.

"Launching investigations, detectives discovered that the medical papers supplied to the patient by the quack claiming to be lab results from German Medical Centre, Jubaland Imaging.

The DCI stated that the Imaging Centre and Mater Hospital were fake and falsified. The PPB also confirmed that the suspect lacked proof of medical officer registration and a business registration certificate.

The suspect is currently detained at the Kamukunji Police Station awaiting arraignment.
